With Windows 7, Microsoft has completely redone their approach to the taskbar, which now sports a more Mac OSX-like appearance. You can 'pin' programs to the taskbar, which is now more like an extended quick launch. The one shortcoming of this new feature, though, is the inability to add folders to the taskbar.
Sure, the default Explorer folder is pinned permanently, but if you try to create a shortcut for, say, the folder D:Music, it will be pinned to the Jump List right-click option of the Explorer icon. Thus, by default, you cannot add an icon or separate entry for your favourite folder to the Windows 7 taskbar.
But there are workarounds for the same and the most effective one that we have found is with the use of the program Standalone Stacks 2.
The software mimics the function of 'Stacks' in OSX, which are little shortcut icons that let you browse folders on your computer through a small pop-up, without actually opening the explorer window itself.
To create a new stack, all you have to do is run Standalone Stacks 2, select 'New Stack', point it to the desired folder and choose it to pop upwards in the direction field. An icon will then appear on your desktop, which can be pinned to your taskbar by right-clicking on it and choosing 'Pin to taskbar'. We do recommend you change your icon before you do so, as once it is pinned, the icon cannot be changed. Free Software Download
When you click on your newly created stack icon in the taskbar, you will see a translucent pop-up of either a 'stack' vertical layout of the files in the folder or a 'grid' layout of the files. You can click through this pop-up and browse through it just like you would a normal explorer window. Additionally, the last option of the grid or stack allows you to open the same folder in the normal Windows Explorer.
Standalone Stacks 2 is a simple and effective way to add folders to your Windows 7 taskbar. And of course, if you are not on Windows 7, you can afford of the same features from a desktop icon.
